Giveaway: Gluten-free cookies from Butterfly Desserts

Butterfly Vegan Bakery is back! Previously we ran a giveaway for cinnamon rolls and it was awesome. Visitors to my blog loved it, so we're doing another giveaway for some treats. Eating vegan once in a while is fun and great for the body. I like to treat myself to vegan desserts and you should too!

There are many physical benefits of vegan foods, including:
  • Weight loss
  • Increased energy
  • Healthy skin
  • Strong hair and nails
  • Reduced body odor

I recently tried some delicious vegan apple pie muffins from Parvaneh at her Etsy shop, Butterfly Desserts. As she states on her profile, her name means butterfly! She has a passion for eating and making healthy food - especially desserts.

All of Butterfly Desserts' products are made with unrefined sugars like coconut sugar and are SOY FREE. They are also super low-fat and low calorie. All packaging is biodegradable or recyclable. Even the clear bags used for packaging smaller items (like muffins) are made with corn starch - not plastic! That's right, the bags are made with corn starch.

Parvaneh has plenty of other cool stuff in her shop, so check it out. Also, she's taking part in a competition for a small business grant. Vote for Butterfly Vegan Bakery here to help her win one of ten small business grants from FedEx. Vote by clicking on the purple button.

Giveaway: Squatty Potty toilet stool (you'll laugh, but it works!)

I first discovered Squatty Potty while watching ABC's Shark Tank, a show where entrepreneurs pitch their businesses to investors. At first I chuckled when they did a quick demonstration to show how it's used. Let's face it, pooping is a funny topic.

But then I started to take it seriously as the Squatty Potty founders explained how effective the stool is.

As humans, we're designed to squat, but instead we sit on toilets. Sitting keeps the colon kinked, kind of like when there's a kink or wrinkle in a hose and the flow of water is slowed. Squatting, on the other hand, allows the colon to fully relax and empty quickly.

I suffer from IBS, so constipation is a regular part of my life. My eyes lit up when I saw there's a solution that could help! And for less than $30, you're getting a lot of value for something that can be life-changing.

And it works.

At first, using the stool was uncomfortable, but I quickly adjusted to it. Being tall (6'5") makes the squatting position a bit cramped, but I manage fine. For me, using the bathroom just became a better experience. I still have constipation, but it's not nearly as severe while using this stool.

So who wants a stool?! The folks at Squatty Potty have been gracious enough to offer up a free toilet stool to one lucky reader.

Giveaway: Alaska Glacial Mud Co purifying mineral mud masque

I first discovered Alaska Glacial Mud Co while watching ABC's Shark Tank, a show where entrepreneurs pitch their businesses to investors. I was intrigued.

Lauren, the founder of Alaska Glacial Mud, runs her mud business out of the small town of Cordova, Alaska, a quaint little city regarded as a hidden treasure. She's also a commercial salmon fisherwoman, and she runs the fishing boat all by herself from the photos I've seen. My wife and I agree she is one tough cookie! We also say she's living the good life in beautiful Alaska. Check out Lauren's story.

In a previous post I mentioned I've been looking for natural and fun ways to improve my health. Feeling confident and looking great can be challenge, and I've been experimenting with various mud masques for a few weeks now.

I recently had the privilege of trying the purifying mud masque, harvested from the soft, buttery mud banks of the Copper River Delta in Alaska. Picture a serene, beautiful wilderness landscape with flowing rivers and no signs of humankind - that's where your mud is coming from!

Source: alaskaglacialmud.com/laurens-story

Made with the most mineral-rich and pure glacial clay in the world, the masque is enriched with certified organic and botanical extracts that have moisturizing and skin-softening properties.

My wife and I love it! Alaska Glacial Mud has several different scents (I prefer the unscented) and you don't need to add water or do any mixing. It's ready to use when you open the jar, which is of very nice quality I might add. The jar is thick glass and feels solid in my hands. Nice packaging too.

The mud detoxifies and softens my skin, and I prefer to focus my application on and around my nose where my pores are biggest. It's also allergy-free and doesn't cause irritation, which is key for me as I have sensitive skin. I have to be careful with creams and the like. After 15 minutes and then washing away, my skin feels soft and refreshed.

Directions are easy.
  1. Apply an even layer of mud with your fingers or the facial brush
  2. Let the mud dry for 15 minutes.
  3. Rinse with a warm cloth and water.
  4. Pat your face dry.

Giveaway: Artisan Bath & Body Dead Sea mud mask

In a previous post I mentioned I've been looking for natural and fun ways to improve my health. Feeling confident and looking great can be challenge, and I've been experimenting with various mud masks.

I recently had the privilege of trying some mud mask and eye cream from Cristy at her Etsy shop, Artisan Bath and Body. As she states on her profile, products are made entirely by hand with high quality ingredients to adhere to a strict standard ensuring quality and freshness. Products are packed by hand at the time you order in a very clean and organized designated area.

Dead Sea mud mask from Artisan Bath & Body

The Dead Sea is the only place in the world with this particular combination of exclusive spa benefits: peculiar sun radiation and climatic conditions, enriched oxygen atmosphere, mineral-rich salt sea, thermomineral springs, and mineral-rich mud.

I'm a fan of this Dead Sea mud mask! Artisan Bath & Body has several different scents (I prefer the unscented) and you don't need to add water or do any mixing. It's ready to use when you open the jar. The mud removes excess oil and dead cells from the skin's surface, and I prefer to focus my application on and around my nose where my pores are biggest. After 15 minutes and then washing away, my skin feels soft and refreshed - certainly much better than it had before.

Directions for using the mud are easy.
  1. Apply a thin layer of Dead Sea mud over your face.
  2. Leave the mud on the skin for 5-15 minutes.
  3. Wet a wash cloth with warm water and lay on your face for a few seconds to soften the mask.
  4. Rinse your face with cold water.
  5. Pat your face dry.

And Cristy has plenty of other cool stuff on her site, so check it out and browse around. Artisan Bath & Body offers luxurious bath & body products that pamper your skin, giving it the attention it deserves.

So who wants to win something?! Cristy is graciously offering a jar of Dead Sea mud mask (unscented) to one of my readers. She also has a code ABB10 for 10% off orders via her shop or site.

Review: Xbox 360 Wireless Controller - Glossy Black

I feel like I'm late to everything that's new in tech, but I recently got a Xbox 360 bundle that includes this black wireless controller. I had some doubts about the efficiency of the wireless controller, but I've been pleased with it so far.

I initially had these quick thoughts... How long will the battery last? Will I experience lagging all the time? Lag is the most frustrating thing, and we all know it. I have a wireless controller for another system that has always given me problems, thus my reservations about Xbox 360. But fear not, prospective buyer, because Xbox 360 is awesome.

The battery is advertised as having 40 hours of life. That's plenty of life for a couple of AA batteries, and frankly I expected less. Being that I've had the Xbox 360 for just awhile, I'm approaching 40 hours of controller usage and haven't experienced any issues. The time will soon come, but I'm happy with the amount of playing time I've got from a couple AAs. Plus, no tangled wires or tugging at the console.

The controller also has a 30-foot range. I haven't needed to be 30 feet away from the console, but it works just fine from the opposite end of a typical living room. Maybe in some fantasy when I live in a mansion with an auditorium for a game room I'll truly be able to test out the range.

As for the feel in my hands, it's one of the more comfortable and ergonomic controllers I've ever held. I'm seriously considering buying more wireless controllers rather than wired ones. Check out the gold chrome design if you feel like royalty.

Why does lighting a match in the bathroom eliminate odor?

Ever heard someone suggest lighting a match in the bathroom after someone's left an odor in there? It's a funny thing, but it's effective and there's a reason for it.

Lighting a match with match box

According to a La Trobe University study:
When a match is struck, the first thing to burn is the head. The head of a match contains a chemical cocktail that includes a lot of sulfur. In the initial burst of combustion products there is therefore a lot of sulfur dioxide. Sulfur dioxide is an extremely pungent substance, to which the smell receptors are extremely sensitive. But it also has a very efficient numbing effect on the sense of smell. You can smell a minute amount of sulfur dioxide, but when you have done so, you will not smell anything else for a while. Sulfur dioxide is a gaseous combustion product, so if this is the main factor no-one wins the bet. It is not flame (plasma) nor smoke (solid aerosol).

To sum that up, sulfur is in the head of a match. When we strike and light a match, sulfur dioxide gets in the air, and our senses are sensitive to it. We smell nothing but the lit match.

Does the lit match get rid of the smell in the bathroom? No, the odor in the bathroom has not been eliminated, but due to our sensitivity to sulfur dioxide it masks other odors.

Try it! This won't be as effective with a candle or lighter, however.

Recently I've been looking for natural and fun ways to improve my health, and feeling confident and looking great can be challenge.

Giveaway: Super Bowl dancing shark tote bag from Hold The Cheese

Katy Perry's sharks stole the halftime show of Super Bowl XLIX. What was the left shark thinking though?! We can all agree it wasn't his best effort. And if you haven't seen the shark dance yet, check it out:

The left shark has become a Super Bowl icon now, and people are crazy about him (and the right shark too I suppose). We need more of them!

I recently had the privilege of chatting with Cait who has an Etsy shop, Hold The Cheese. As she states on her profile, she does branding, bridal, baby design, and everything in between. Hold The Cheese is a design boutique that focuses on custom creations, and friendly, individual interactions.

Cait has an awesome left shark design in her shop that's available as a tote bag, t-shirt, and pillow. With her design you can be a part of the left shark dance team!

Giveaway Guy: How soon after seeing the halftime show did you know you were going to make that shark shirt?
Hold The Cheese: I’m pretty sure that if other people were watching me enjoy the Super Bowl XLIX Halftime show, they would have told me to calm my nerding down. The lights, the projected floor, the puppet tiger… those full-body foam costumed backup dancers! The immediate live commentary on my social media feeds for the now infamous Left Shark blossomed into this beautiful persona. It stewed 24 hours. While working on some client design work late at night (my typical work hours,) it came to me. My milestone had been reached for the evening only existing project and I opened a new file around 12:30AM. “Draw that shark,” said the voice in my head. And the design built itself. The idea that the shirt contents would instantly indoctrinate its wearer onto the Dance Team excited me… even if there was only one person on the team. I wanted to create something that lived a little longer than a meme yet was fun enough to pass for common pop culture visuals if someone hadn’t witnessed the Katy Perry halftime show (because there are people who didn’t watch the game…) T-shirt design has long been a favorite print medium of mine. Shirts exist beyond a moment, are chosen as apparel because they mean something to you and travel with you as part of how you define your personal visual brand. Before I knew it, it was 2AM. I’d already mocked up the images, and listed the shirt, tote and pillow and I’m poised to post a hoodie and a tank top.

GG: What do you think was going on with that left shark? Lack of effort? Forgot his moves?
HTC: I think it just happened. I’m pretty sure Bryan Gaw, long time touring backup dancer for Katy Perry as revealed by People Magazine and others sources, wouldn’t just forget moves. Professionals practice so they can effortlessly do their thing when the spotlight is on. You couldn’t be much more in the spotlight than center stage at Super Bowl halftime. But things happen. Maybe he sneezed inside that dark, warm foam costume. Maybe he “took it all in” and had a moment. More likely, he danced in an entertaining way, beginning synchronized with lesser acknowledged Right Shark, ScottMyrick. Finishing with a turn towards Katy at the same time as his shark friend suggests there was scripting to the timing of the moves in the first place. But if the two had danced harmoniously, would we be talking about it? Or would the focus have been dominated by the tiger puppet or Katy floating around on the "The More You Know" star? I’m in favor of the rogue dancing legend that was spawned by the interwebs.

GG: Have you ever participated in a play or performance?
HTC: Yes. It’s a big part of my life. I grew up dancing ballet, jazz, tap and modern. I was in an adorkable amount of choral concerts and productions. Several costumes included sequined suspenders, most included leotards and spandex. I picked up a flag and joined color guard in high school and continued through college at Purdue University. Performing with the Golden Silks in the Purdue“All-American” Marching Band afforded me the ability to travel and perform in front of huge crowds at several college bowl games, an NFL game, and at the Indianapolis 500 five times. Now I am a guard instructor for a marching band in Illinois as well as a 6+ year guest choreographer for a high school band day hosted at a Big Ten school. I’m also married to a phenomenally talented musician and music educator.

GG: What sets your designs apart from others on Etsy?
HTC: I’m equal parts educated, professional, romantic, insomniac, optimist and dreamer with a healthy dash of crazy. I create things for me and share them with the world. My marketing and corporate design background merge well with my spontaneity and quirkiness.

GG: What’s your best-selling Etsy item?
HTC: For a while, it was any of my custom photo pillows with beautiful handwritten script, many times celebrating a wedding, baby, or event. Then Left Shark Dance Team items took over. But it’s still nothing compared to the quick growth of my boutique shop, DentalDesign Emporium. DDE launched a year ago as a unique place for gifts and office decor for dental professionals and friends of dentistry. I was inspired when I couldn’t find awesome things to give to my newly hooded dentist sister. I create things as they strike me and strive to only produce classy somethings worth sharing with a friend. International collaborations have been my favorite part of my custom work.

GG: What about an Etsy item of yours that flies under the radar? Which item deserves our attention?
HTC: My multimedia watercolor typography is totally up and coming within my shop. I’m recapturing a love of the paint brush and using all my digital wizardry skills to really work all the facets of my right brain. Most recently, I produced a piece called Beautiful Dreamer, inspired by part of David Gillingham’s “Foster’s America.” It’s more in the vein of where I see future creations being born. I enjoy tangible media as much as I love my Wacom tablet and digital tools.

Giveaway: Kinesiology tape from StrengthTape, the official tape of IRONMAN

I used to wear a soft, stretchable brace to provide a bit of support, which can be a nuisance. But wearing the StrengthTape tape is so much more streamlined. It won't fix an injury, but it provides support and it's been smooth sailing while wearing the tape on long distance runs.

People have even asked me about StrengthTape when they see me wearing it, and I'm happy to recommend it and talk about the benefits. I feel it's often overlooked as an option for athletic support.

The tape is pre-cut which is such a time saver. In the past I was bringing tiny scissors with me everywhere to cut tape, but with StrengthTape I don't have to cut anything. Check out the instructional videos on their site for how to tape up various body parts effectively.

So who wants a couple rolls of kinesio tape?! The folks at StrengthTape have been gracious enough to offer up two free rolls.

Recently the CEO of Apple, Tim Cook, noted that in the last quarter of 2014 he saw the highest number of people switching from Android to iPhone. The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus have larger screens than ever before, luring in new customers.

Cook said:
“I would also point out that we had the highest number of customers new to iPhone last quarter than in any prior launch"

Fupu makes wood cases to protect your iPhone 6 and they ship worldwide for free. The cases are aesthetically pleasing and better for the environment when you move on to something else.

Giveaway: Vegan cinnamon rolls from Vegan Indies Bakery

I gave away some vegan cinnamon rolls awhile back and it went great! Time for more.

In a previous post about making New Years resolutions to eat better or lose weight, I suggested eating vegan once in a while. I like to treat myself to vegan desserts and you should too!

There are many physical benefits of vegan foods, including:
  • Weight loss
  • Increased energy
  • Healthy skin
  • Strong hair and nails
  • Reduced body odor

I recently had the privilege of trying some delicious vegan cinnamon rolls from Hashina at her Etsy shop, The Vegan Indies. As she states on her profile, Hashina is a happy producer of vegan sweet treats from the West Indies.

Cinnamon roll from Vegan Indies Bakery

And I'm a happy consumer of cinnamon rolls! You wouldn't even know these rolls are vegan, and they're as good as any I've ever had. With plump raisins and chock full of nuts (can be made without nuts too), the rolls have great flavor and are soft and chewy. I had trouble limiting myself to just one even though one roll is the perfect size for a dessert for one.

Hashina has plenty of other cool stuff in her shop, so check it out.

So who wants to win some vegan cinnamon rolls?! Hashina is graciously offering 4 of her vegan rolls to one of my readers.
