Giveaway: Super Bowl dancing shark tote bag from Hold The Cheese

Katy Perry's sharks stole the halftime show of Super Bowl XLIX. What was the left shark thinking though?! We can all agree it wasn't his best effort. And if you haven't seen the shark dance yet, check it out:

The left shark has become a Super Bowl icon now, and people are crazy about him (and the right shark too I suppose). We need more of them!

I recently had the privilege of chatting with Cait who has an Etsy shop, Hold The Cheese. As she states on her profile, she does branding, bridal, baby design, and everything in between. Hold The Cheese is a design boutique that focuses on custom creations, and friendly, individual interactions.

Cait has an awesome left shark design in her shop that's available as a tote bag, t-shirt, and pillow. With her design you can be a part of the left shark dance team!

Giveaway Guy: How soon after seeing the halftime show did you know you were going to make that shark shirt?
Hold The Cheese: I’m pretty sure that if other people were watching me enjoy the Super Bowl XLIX Halftime show, they would have told me to calm my nerding down. The lights, the projected floor, the puppet tiger… those full-body foam costumed backup dancers! The immediate live commentary on my social media feeds for the now infamous Left Shark blossomed into this beautiful persona. It stewed 24 hours. While working on some client design work late at night (my typical work hours,) it came to me. My milestone had been reached for the evening only existing project and I opened a new file around 12:30AM. “Draw that shark,” said the voice in my head. And the design built itself. The idea that the shirt contents would instantly indoctrinate its wearer onto the Dance Team excited me… even if there was only one person on the team. I wanted to create something that lived a little longer than a meme yet was fun enough to pass for common pop culture visuals if someone hadn’t witnessed the Katy Perry halftime show (because there are people who didn’t watch the game…) T-shirt design has long been a favorite print medium of mine. Shirts exist beyond a moment, are chosen as apparel because they mean something to you and travel with you as part of how you define your personal visual brand. Before I knew it, it was 2AM. I’d already mocked up the images, and listed the shirt, tote and pillow and I’m poised to post a hoodie and a tank top.

GG: What do you think was going on with that left shark? Lack of effort? Forgot his moves?
HTC: I think it just happened. I’m pretty sure Bryan Gaw, long time touring backup dancer for Katy Perry as revealed by People Magazine and others sources, wouldn’t just forget moves. Professionals practice so they can effortlessly do their thing when the spotlight is on. You couldn’t be much more in the spotlight than center stage at Super Bowl halftime. But things happen. Maybe he sneezed inside that dark, warm foam costume. Maybe he “took it all in” and had a moment. More likely, he danced in an entertaining way, beginning synchronized with lesser acknowledged Right Shark, ScottMyrick. Finishing with a turn towards Katy at the same time as his shark friend suggests there was scripting to the timing of the moves in the first place. But if the two had danced harmoniously, would we be talking about it? Or would the focus have been dominated by the tiger puppet or Katy floating around on the "The More You Know" star? I’m in favor of the rogue dancing legend that was spawned by the interwebs.

GG: Have you ever participated in a play or performance?
HTC: Yes. It’s a big part of my life. I grew up dancing ballet, jazz, tap and modern. I was in an adorkable amount of choral concerts and productions. Several costumes included sequined suspenders, most included leotards and spandex. I picked up a flag and joined color guard in high school and continued through college at Purdue University. Performing with the Golden Silks in the Purdue“All-American” Marching Band afforded me the ability to travel and perform in front of huge crowds at several college bowl games, an NFL game, and at the Indianapolis 500 five times. Now I am a guard instructor for a marching band in Illinois as well as a 6+ year guest choreographer for a high school band day hosted at a Big Ten school. I’m also married to a phenomenally talented musician and music educator.

GG: What sets your designs apart from others on Etsy?
HTC: I’m equal parts educated, professional, romantic, insomniac, optimist and dreamer with a healthy dash of crazy. I create things for me and share them with the world. My marketing and corporate design background merge well with my spontaneity and quirkiness.

GG: What’s your best-selling Etsy item?
HTC: For a while, it was any of my custom photo pillows with beautiful handwritten script, many times celebrating a wedding, baby, or event. Then Left Shark Dance Team items took over. But it’s still nothing compared to the quick growth of my boutique shop, DentalDesign Emporium. DDE launched a year ago as a unique place for gifts and office decor for dental professionals and friends of dentistry. I was inspired when I couldn’t find awesome things to give to my newly hooded dentist sister. I create things as they strike me and strive to only produce classy somethings worth sharing with a friend. International collaborations have been my favorite part of my custom work.

GG: What about an Etsy item of yours that flies under the radar? Which item deserves our attention?
HTC: My multimedia watercolor typography is totally up and coming within my shop. I’m recapturing a love of the paint brush and using all my digital wizardry skills to really work all the facets of my right brain. Most recently, I produced a piece called Beautiful Dreamer, inspired by part of David Gillingham’s “Foster’s America.” It’s more in the vein of where I see future creations being born. I enjoy tangible media as much as I love my Wacom tablet and digital tools.
