Komax pitcher for National Iced Tea Month [giveaway]

We just had a mini heat wave last week in Massachusetts, which is uncharacteristic for middle of May.

My go-to cold drink is iced tea, and I've been drinking it on the way to work. So many people like iced coffee, but I really don't like it. Iced tea is more refreshing anyway in my opinion.

And when I'm not on the road, a Komax pitcher of iced tea in the fridge always welcomes me at home. The Komax Titan pitcher is made of plastic, but looks a bit like glass, and is also dishwasher safe. It holds two quarts, so that's about eight 8-oz glasses of water or iced tea or whatever you like.

Oh, and June is also National Iced Tea Month believe it or not.

So in celebration of iced tea, I'm going to give away this Komax pitcher to one lucky Giveaway Guy reader. It's available to everyone worldwide.

I also have a bunch of other giveaways going on so check 'em out if you haven't already!

Amazon gift card & author SF Said's "Phoenix" [giveaway]

Young Star Wars fans seeking another saga to love can look to this epic middle-grade adventure, Phoenix, from author SF Said. Phoenix is illustrated by Dave McKean with remarkable white-on-black spacescapes.

SF Said is an award-winning author living in London since he was 2 years old. He wrote his first novel, Varjak Paw, in 2003, while working as a speechwriter for the Crown Prince of Jordan.

I discovered SF Said on Twitter when I was searching for content about The Little Prince, a children's book I recently finished and have sort of become obsessed with. The book is one of his favorites too.

Phoenix is SF Said's third book. It's about a boy with unprecedented power who must turn to the terrifying Alien enemies of humanity to discover his true nature and bring peace to a galaxy at war. The Daily Mail gave the book praise, which is nothing to sneeze at.

"Fabulous, high-octane stuff, with an uplifting ending, stunningly illustrated by the brilliant McKean" – The Daily Mail

Lucky lives a relatively normal life on a remote moon of the planet Aries One, safe from the turmoil and devastation of the interstellar war between Humans and Aliens. Lucky has seen images of the horned, cloven-hooved Aliens before, but he’s never seen one up close.

Then one night, he dreams that the stars are singing to him—and wakes to evidence suggesting that he is not so normal after all.

When Lucky’s mother sacrifices herself to help him escape an elite Human military force called the Shadow Guards, he must rely on the Alien crew of a ramshackle starship, where he finds that humanity’s deadly enemies seem surprisingly Human up close.

In fact, they may be more Human than Lucky himself, who has a dangerous power that could change the course of the war and the fate of the galaxy—if he can learn how to use it.

So who wants to win something?! Candlewick Press and I have partnered up to give away a few things - two lucky Giveaway Guy readers will win a copy of SF Said's Phoenix and another reader will win a $20 Amazon gift card.

Relaxing lemongrass body lotion from Lee's Lotions

Last Fall I featured lavender body lotion and Lee's Lotions is back this time with lemongrass. This is a reminder we should be wary of ingredients we put on our skin.

Lees Lotions is an Etsy shop run by Kelly out of New Hampshire, a state I've been to many times. It's a wonderful place for those who like the outdoors. Kelly makes lotions made only from all-natural, organic oils and beeswax to assure you the skin that you're meant to feel.

Kelly's products might not be pretty colors, but they hold a beautiful natural shade of gold because there's no synthetic coloring or flavoring. There are no synthetic materials or chemicals used in the lotions, soaps, or any other beauty accessories.

The lotion is great before bed or getting up in the morning. Or just use it as a way to calm the mind and the body. Try using this lotion right after you get out of the shower - your skin will quickly turn softer than ever before. Use it on your face, hands, wherever.

The lemongrass lotion will brighten your dull day and leave you with an improved mental clarity. All you need is a small dab and the jar will last a long time. It doesn't take much to get good coverage on your skin.

We should always have control over what goes on our skin, and this lemongrass body lotion is sure to fix your dry, cracked skin. My knuckles usually get very dry in the cold months, but even in Spring I apply.

Whether you're a man, woman, or child with dry skin, give this lotion a shot and give your skin the moisture it needs.

So who wants to win something?! Lee's Lotions is offering a jar of natural lemongrass lotion to TWO lucky Giveaway Guy readers.

Enter to win using the Rafflecopter form below. You may share on Twitter once a day for extra points for the duration of the giveaway.

Rockwell Pets natural dog shampoo [review]

As dog owners we have more than enough to worry about. Isn't it nice using things made with high quality ingredients?

Rockwell Pets Pro is passionate about their products, and the well-being of our pets is a priority. They're committed to making more natural and safer products for our pets and families.

The natural pet shampoo, which Henry got his paws on, is made from Aloe Vera, Hemp Seed, and Argan Kernel, as well as Natural Willow, Meadowsweet, Chaparral, and Olive Extracts.

The shampoo re-moisturizes dry skin for better health and well-being, and I was happy to try it out with Henry. Well, Henry tried it. Not me.
  • MOISTURIZES AND SOOTHES - natural ingredients improve skin conditions and soothe your dog’s coat.
  • PROMOTES NATURAL SKIN FLORA - luxurious oils replenish your dog’s natural oils to moisturize skin and promote a healthy coat.
  • COMFORTS DRY AND ITCHY SKIN - liquid soap that is free of petroleum and animal by-products to support your dog’s well-being and reduce sensitive reactions.

Henry about to have a bath

Rockwell Pets' shampoo is eco-friendly and made from natural ingredients. Free from synthetic fragrances, colors, or antimicrobial preservatives for a better experience. I won't just use any brand with my dog - it has to me made of good ingredients and have a good reputation.

Using the shampoo is just like using shampoo on yourself. Get your dog wet with warm water, massage the shampoo into the roots, and rinse everything off.

Rockwell Pets recommends monthly baths to remove accumulated toxins and maintain the natural skin flora. With Henry, he gets baths more frequently than that since he goes hiking just about every day and gets muddy.

Rockwell Pets even has a Vizsla in a product image

I like this natural pet shampoo. It's scented with lavender but it's really not that overpowering, and there might be a hint of eucalyptus in there. The shampoo does the job, getting rid of dirt and grime, leaving your dog fresh and clean.

Henry's hair isn't greasy or anything and it's just as soft as ever.

If for some reason you have a bad experience with the shampoo, Rockwell Pets will replace the product or give you 100% of your money back, no questions asked. Give it a try with your dog!

Weekday Best's watercolor dog portraits [review]

For the dog lovers who read this blog, or if you like colorful art as I do, check out this artist! I recently had the pleasure of getting my hands (or should I say paws) on a print of an original watercolor portrait from Weekday Best.

Shaunna is the artist of Weekday Best, specializing in watercolor portraits. These portraits are a fun way to capture the personality of our pets! You can either purchase prints of Shaunna's originals, or get a custom watercolor portrait in a colorful, fun style.

German short-haired pointer watercolor

The watercolor print I have is the German short-haired pointer (GSP), shown above. GSPs are very similar to the Vizsla, which I have, and both breeds are a lot of fun. The GSP and Vizsla have similar bodies and facial features, and they both require a lot of exercise. Not just a walk or two a day - they need to run and hike.

The painting also can look like a Weimaraner or other sporting dog. And this print is of an original watercolor painting in bright and bold colors, and a few paint spatters for good measure. Shaunna loves to paint in bright colors to bring out your pet's personality.

I'm a fan of color (that's what I say when people poke fun at my wardrobe choices), and I'm impressed with Shaunna's work.

Henry doing his best to imitate a GSP

You can choose from a variety of print sizes in portrait format - 5x7, 8x10, 11x14, and 13x19. This archival matte paper features a smooth surface, heavy weight, neutral white, matte paper engineered for accurate color reproduction.

Watercolor print hanging on the wall

My wife has the watercolor print hanging on the wall in her office and it says it brightens her day and makes her think of our boy Henry. I might have to get a print for my own office for a bit of color.

Turnaround time for a custom portrait is anywhere from 6-10 weeks, so if you need it by a certain date be sure to contact Shaunna of Weekday Best. A one of a kind painting is waiting for you!

Amazon gift card & author L.S. O'Dea's "Escape" [giveaway]

If you're in need of a book for Spring, how 'bout the fantasy genre?

Author L.S. O'Dea grew up the youngest of seven. She always wanted to do what her older siblings were doing, especially reading stories. Ill at a young age, she immersed herself in books. Her life changed when she read a short story written by her older brother and realized that normal (somewhat anyway, since her brother was a bit weird in her opinion) people created these amazing stories. From that day forward, she wanted to write. However, as with all good stories, obstacles rose in her path (mostly self-created obstacles) and it took her many years to put finger to keyboard and write/type her first book.

Cover of L.S. O'Dea's "Escape"

Escape is the first book in an ongoing series authored by O'Dea called Lake of Sins. Hundreds of years after the Great Death desolated the planet, the world was reborn. Ruled by humans and filled with human-animal hybrids the difference between life and death is determined by a creature’s purpose and usefulness to society.

For a Producer, the lowest of the classes, the only guarantee of survival is being chosen to stay in the encampment and breed. The other teenagers are loaded onto carts and taken away, never to be seen or heard from again.

Still curious about Escape? Time for an interview with L.S. O'Dea...

What inspired you to write Escape?
I’ve pondered this question quite a bit. The shell of the story has been rattling around inside my head for years being somewhat inspired by my studies on how animals are treated in our society. I mean, why do we eat pigs, cows, chickens, etc but are appalled that other cultures eat dogs and cats? Animals are animals, right? Obviously, not in our minds. We didn’t base our decision on what becomes food on intelligence because many animals, including pigs, are smarter than dogs and cats.

For me, this is how stories begin. One question, one thread and I follow it. For this example, I followed it into fantasy. It didn’t start out that way. In the original shell of a story, all the characters were pure human. There were no genetic modifications anywhere. That all changed as I started writing.

So, in some ways the series was inspired by my studies, beliefs and questions but it took shape and became the story it is on its own. I don’t want readers to think this is a preachy story about animal rights because it isn’t. Many people don’t even pick up on that thread and I’m proud of that. A good book speaks to us on many levels and each time we read it we get something new because we’ve changed. That’s what I hope people get in this series.

How long does it take you write a book, on average?
I’ll have to guess at this one and I’ll explain why in a moment. It probably takes me about six months to a year to write a full length novel. Why so long? Well, first my books are big. The smallest in the series so far is over 300 pages. The others are around 500 plus.

Also, I write differently than many authors. I sit down and write the rough draft for all the books. Initially, Escape and Secrets in Blood were one book but when I finished it was too long (according to agents). So, I broke it into two books. After publishing them, I realized that there was a lot more to the story, so I sat down and wrote the rest. The entire series is done in rough draft format.

Now, I go back and edit, fleshing out the books.

I also have a lot of editing phases which take time. The first phase is the initial edit. This is where I take the rough draft and shape it, adding, moving and removing a lot of text. Once this done and the work is in the shape that it should be, I continue to edit, but this time, I chip away and tighten it up.

When that’s done, I move on to my next phase. This is where I have a beta reader or two who read one chapter and then we discuss it. This takes time. My books have a lot of chapters. The chapters are usually short, but these beta readers and I go through each chapter together.

When that’s done, I edit it again myself—usually, once more in electronic format and then once in paperback. I see typos and errors better on paper. Once that’s done I send it to my next tier of beta readers. I give them a month or so to read the book.

While they’re reading, I continue to edit. I edit my books until I don’t change one thing – not one word.

After the second tier of beta readers is done, I send the book to my third tier. This group looks for typos that I missed. It doesn’t matter how many times I go over the books, there is always something I missed. I also give this group about a month to read the book.

Then, I send it to my ARC (Advanced Reader Copies) readers. These folks agree to give me feedback and leave a review when the book is released. I give them a month to read the story also (although, at this point, I’m working on my next book).

So, it takes me a long time to write each book, but when it’s done – it’s a perfect as I can make it and so far the reviews have been positive with 94% of those who left a review for Escape on Amazon giving it four or five stars.

What are you working on right now?
Right now, I’m working on Betrayed, book four in the Lake of Sins series, and book five (tentative title Whispers). I often work on two (different stages of editing) at the same time.

When book five is done, I’ll probably work on some Conguise Chronicles books (a spin-off of the Lake of Sins series). I only have one in that series and I have several others in my head vying for my attention.

What's the best writing tip you can offer?
Don’t wait for a muse. Don’t believe in writer’s block. Writing is work. It’s a job (one I love, but a job). In my day job, I don’t wait until I feel like going to work, to go (if I did, I’d never get there). Treat your writing like any other job. You have to go to get paid.

Even when nothing is flowing, sit down and write. Don’t worry about getting it right, just get it down. Let your imagination lead you. Edit it later.

What's a book written by another author everyone should read in their lifetime?
There are so many good books out there, that this is a really hard question. I’d have to say that everyone should read the works of Shakespeare. The man was a genius. He covers it all – love, hate, ambition, magic, betrayal, etc.

Old cover of L.S. O'Dea's "Escape"

Interested in a taste of O'Dea's writing style? Here's an excerpt the book Secrets In Blood:

Hugh and Tim followed the Guard inside the room. Red emergency lights illuminated the interior, casting an eerie glow along the tanks and cages that cluttered the lab. In the tanks floated creatures, things not quite…right. Inside one was something with hundreds of tiny legs protruding from its long, cylindrical body. Hugh stepped around to the other side of the tank and froze. The creature had the face of a Guard. He tapped on the glass.
“The ones in the tanks are dead,” said Laddie. “They’re the lucky ones.”
He slowly wandered after Laddie, studying the inhabitants of the other tanks. One contained a creature with gills and many teeth, similar to the animal that was in the water with Tim only larger, much larger. Another held a Guard that had armor plates growing out of his back. The Guard was flat, like he’d been crushed.
“What is this place?” Tim scooted around the tanks, averting his eyes.
“Welcome to Conguise’s retirement home,” said Laddie.
Hugh staggered backward and Laddie grabbed his arm, yanking him forward. A long tentacle snaked out of the cage behind him. It swiped at where he’d just been and slithered back into the darkness of its prison.
“Shit.” Tim backed up against a tank, face pale.
“Stay by the tanks,” said Laddie. “Those are the failed experiments. The cages…well, they ain’t failed yet.”

Croscill home design and area rugs [giveaway]

You know what can make a room a lot nicer? An area rug.

Croscill has set the standard for contemporary designs that beautify our homes. Their design team is comprised of leaders in the home decor industry. The team is dedicated to providing elegant choices, from timeless classics to superb interpretations of the latest trends.

If you want the best in home design, look no further. The exquisite work of Croscill's artisans and designers results in an unmatched quality that makes Croscill the first choice among those who desire the very best for their home.

I recently had the pleasure of laying down the Tile Path area rug, featuring a transitional design. I have the 5x8 but it's also available in 4x6 and 8x10.

The rug is hand-tufted (a new phrase I like to say now) and made of wool and bamboo silk. The colors you see are grey, black, brown, and charcoal. If you're going for a rustic look like I am, this rug is great.

Each rug is individually handmade, which results in slight color variations from rug to rug, so no rug is exactly the same. It’s the nature of a beautifully handcrafted rug.

Here are some care instructions important to keep in mind:

  • Vacuum regularly on a low setting. Initial shedding may occur and is a natural characteristics of heavy pile wool rugs.
  • To avoid damage to your rug, vacuum with the beater bar off.
  • Should long ends of yarn appear on surface, do not pull.
  • Use scissors to trim yarn evenly with rug surface.
  • Blot spills immediately with a clean, dry cloth.
  • Spot clean with mild soap if needed; harsh chemicals may damage or fade rugs.
  • Occasional professional cleaning may be required.
  • Do not steam clean.

Croscill has been an innovator in creating new styles. Croscill applied the same philosophy of combining the latest innovations with the highest quality standards in expanding their products to include designs for every area of the home. It's safe to say I've easily created a designer's custom look for my home.

So who wants to win something for their home?! Croscill is graciously offering $50 to spend on the site to one lucky Giveaway Guy reader. You must spend at least $100.

Flexi retractable dog leash [giveaway]

Since we got Henry six months ago we've tried a lot of dog products. Toys, leashes, poop bags, you name it.

One thing that's held up very well is the Flexi retractable dog leash. We use it all the time. Even though this leash is the #99 best seller in the retractable leashes category on Amazon, there are nearly 600 reviews with an average of 4.5 stars. I'd give it that rating too.

I'm going to give away a Flexi retractable dog leash to one lucky Giveaway Guy reader. You can choose which color and size you like.

This retractable dog leash features a stylish design and an ergonomic grip handle. With its innovative short-stroke braking system, the the Flexi leash creates a high level of safety and comfort during walks with your furry friend.

I recommend hooking any kind of leash to a harness like the one Henry's wearing below. This way there's no stress on the neck when the dog pulls, and instead the stress is around the body.

Frog Hollow Farm's organic fresh fruit gifts [review]

Mother's Day is in a week and Father's Day is next month. Have a gift for either yet? Fruit and goodies is usually a good choice.

Frog Hollow Farm is a 143-acre organic farm in Brentwood, California just east of San Francisco. The farm is home to hundreds of trees which produce peaches, nectarines, cherries, apricots, apriums, plums, pluots, pears, olives, persimmons, quince, and apples. That's quite an orchard.

Springtime care package

Frog Hollow Farm is certified organic with C.C.O.F. (California Certified Organic Farmers) and committed to sustainable practices. Sustainability is important as they chose to go organic in 1989. They steward the land with care and believe in treading lightly. Not only is the world a healthier place, but your neighbors and family are too.

With Mother's Day in a week and Father's Day around the corner, consider a gift set. Frog Hollow's baskets and sets include a variety of gourmet fruit conserves, organic fruit, and organic marmalade. All gift sets are shipped in stylish packaging, which I can verify is pretty cool. My wife was so pleased.

Sending a care package from Frog Hollow is a good match for any occasion. And with Spring in the air, the Springtime care package is perfect. Here's what it includes:
  • Seasonal organic fresh fruit (3 lbs)
  • Hungarian shortbread
  • Granola (8 oz)
  • Apricot / Peach conserve (8 oz)
  • Honey glazed cashews (2.5 oz)
  • Chocolate Ganache Linzer Cookies (4 oz) or Pluot chocolate chip cookies (4 oz)
  • Dark chocolate walnut butter (2 oz)

Organic fresh fruit, granola, cookies, and more

The fresh fruit was in great shape when it arrived and was pretty tasty too. My wife stashed the cookies, and if I know her they were devoured within a day or two. Hopefully she doesn't read this.

I didn't choose with conserve I wanted, but I got the apricot conserve. Handmade at the farm, the conserve captures the luscious flavors of Frog Hollow's legendary fruit.

Explore the online store! There are lots of fruit options - fruit clubs, fresh fruit, dried fruit, fruit spreads, fruit baskets, and more.
