Amazon gift card & author Jean Lowe Carlson's "Blackmark" [giveaway]

Been raining a lot near you? Consider a dark and gritty sword and sorcery series.

Award-winning author Jean Lowe Carlson writes adventurous fantasy fiction with a dark twist. Her raw worlds and deep, realistic characters are reminiscent of George R.R. Martin, Joe Abercrombie, Patrick Rothfuss, and Robert Jordan.

Award-winning author Jean Lowe Carlson

In 2016, Jean was the recipient of the Next Generation Indie Book Awards Finalist medal for her dark fantasy Tears. She was also long-listed for the 2016 Online Writing Tips Short Fiction Prize for her dark fairy tale The Man in White.

As of this writing, Jean has two books in The Kingsmen Chronicles series, a dark and gritty sword and sorcery series that explores a complex world of treachery, passion, sex, and magic. Readers who enjoy Game of Thrones (hello, right here!), Outlander, the Kingkiller Chronicles, or the Wheel of Time will love this fantastic adventure.

A nation's most elite warriors vanished overnight. A throne in jeopardy on the heels of murder. War devouring the survivors, fanned to fury by a shadowy cabal born of ancient magic. And the five friends who can stop it, banished to the corners of the continent as traitors. Welcome to a land where dreams die and men do what they must.

Blackmark, book #1 of The Kingsmen Chronicles

Still curious about The Kingmen Chronicles series? Time for an interview with Jean Lowe Carlson...

What inspires you to write?
Life inspires me. The phrase goes, Truth is stranger than fiction, and I feel that’s really accurate, but it makes great fantasy fiction, too! I draw many of my influences from real-life situations, deep internal motivations, and the dark sides of our personalities that we’re all working on, or running from. I feel a deep connection to humanity, and it’s a passion of mine to explore the human condition. Some people do that through realism, but I take realism and put it inside intense fantasy-world situations. The scenarios often come from my dreams, which are vivid and detailed, cinematic. And I write that cinematic experience into my fantasy novels, but keep the character interactions adult and real.

How long does it take you write a book, on average?
It depends. The longer novels, like my dark epic fantasy Kingsmen Chronicles series, can be upwards of 180K words, and those take me about a year and a half to fully plan and flesh out. The stories are intricate with numerous characters to interweave (think George R.R. Martin, Joe Abercrombie, and Robert Jordan), and it takes a lot of editing to create a smooth, consistent experience. But I have smaller novels, especially some dark fantasy and sci-fi series I’m working on, that I can complete anywhere from 9 months to a year. Plus, I’m often working on two or more novels at once. I’ll get an idea for one, write on it for a few weeks, then get stuck and put it down, then have an idea for the other one - and on it goes!

What are you working on right now?
Lots! I’m currently writing the third novel of the Kingsmen Chronicles series, called Goldenmark. That should be out March 2018. I’m also editing the first book of a badass new dark fantasy series about a whorehouse madam/gunslinger in an alt-world old west who teams up with an asshole of a fallen angel to shoot their way to retribution and punish their enemies. The first book of that series is called Sixgun and should be out in the fall. I’m also writing on a sci-fi series about alternate dimensions, and I am in talks right now with two Amazon top-100 authors about a co-writing project – but I can’t say more about that just yet. ;-)

What's the best writing tip you can offer an aspiring author?
Want to write? Just do it. The Nike slogan is really true. Write a million words. Get your 10,000 hours in. Then repeat the process with learning how to edit your shit. Then repeat again with learning marketing. Fuck the police and the writing-world gatekeepers. Big publishing is dying, and indie is on the rise, but only if you do it right. Read your favorite authors and imitate their style until you find your own. Do NaNoWriMo and push yourself. Take courses in independent publishing and marketing (I recommend Nick Stephenson and Mark Dawson – no affiliation, they just bootcamped my ass into a whole new place marketing-wise!). If the 2016 Author Earnings Report is any indication of trends, indie publishing here to stay. But readers still want a very high-quality experience, even without big publishing house gatekeepers involved. So learn how to create that, and then just fucking do it. Have a job to keep you afloat at first, but don’t let anyone hold you back. My favorite indie horror author and good friend J. Thorn has unpublished 1 million words from the beginning of his catalogue! His first books were shit (J admits this himself), got 1-star reviews, and were horribly edited with bad covers. Did he stop? Hell, no. He learned how to do it better until now he writes full-time and makes a good living doing what he loves. So can you.

What's a book written by another author everyone should read in their lifetime?
Oooh… so many. But I’d have to say Robert A. Heinlein’s Stranger in a Strange Land. I’d love to say Tolkien or King, Martin or Sanderson, but this particular novel of Heinlein’s was formative for me. Not because of his style, but because of the arresting perspective of his main character. What does our humanity look like from the outside, to an outsider? What about our social culture, our habits, our reactions? Heinlein took all that and dumped it on its head during a formative time for the human experience in 1961. And that inquiry is just as necessary today, whether you write contemporary fiction, non-fiction, sci-fi, or any other genre. It’s a tale that struck my heart, deeply. And that, I believe, is the point.

Here's what a couple folks have said about the first book, Blackmark:

“Spellbinding! Strong development of characters, fully integrated storylines with intriguing plot twists, and deep world building. Takes you on a journey you never want to leave!” – Michelle G., Amazon Review

“Like George R.R. Martin and Joe Abercrombie, Carlson writes in this genre for grown-ups, with flair and elegance. A complex world with characters that develop well, this story reveals as it builds!” - Daniel F., Amazon Reviewer

So who wants to win something?! Jean Lowe Carlson and I have partnered up to give away a few things - two lucky Giveaway Guy readers will win a paperback copy of Blackmark (The Kingsmen Chronicles #1) and another reader will win a $40 Amazon gift card.

Where to get free Kindle books

Have you ever wondered where to get free Kindle books? Many of us, including myself, have wanted to get free books on Kindle, so you’re not alone. Who doesn't wanna read for free, right?

Amazon makes it easy to find the “best-selling” free Kindle books, but what they make difficult is the ability to browse all free Kindle books. I'm talking about the entire catalog. Well recently I came across Just Kindle Books, which is a great place to find bargain-priced and free Kindle books.

Just Kindle Books has a great list detailing the top 8 ways to get free books on Kindle. I won't go through all eight ways, but here are a few that I find useful:

  1. Browse the entire selection of free books with Just Kindle Books' simple solution - follow the links they've provided to explore free books by category.
  2. If you're an Amazon Prime member and you have a US address, then you have access to 1,000 free books. You can access the books directly from Amazon.com.
  3. Kindle Advanced Search is a tool for finding e-books by keyword, author, topic, and of course - free. Sort your results by “Price: Low to High” and this is where to get free Kindle books as the $0 price shows first.

If you're new to e-books you might be asking, what is a Kindle book?

A Kindle book is an e-book (electronic book), which is a book publication in digital form. It consists of text and images that are readable on the flat-panel display of electronic devices, including computers.

Although sometimes defined as "an electronic version of a printed book," some e-books exist without a printed (i.e. paper) version. E-books are usually read on e-reader devices like Kindles.

However, almost any device that features a controllable screen can also be used to read e-books, including desktop computers, laptops, tablets, and smartphones. I've read e-books on all of these except tablet.

Kindle Fire & Six Nights of Sin [giveaway]

If you're in need of a book that will stimulate you this summer, how 'bout erotica?

Author Ellis O. Day (that might sound familiar if you've entered some of my book giveaways recently) grew up with her nose buried in books and now enjoys writing the kind of stories she loves to read - romance, the steamier the better.

Ellis believes that the cornerstones of her erotica books and great romantic relationships are:
  • Love and friendship
  • Trust
  • Attraction
  • Fabulous sex

Interviewing for Her Lover, which you can get FREE, is the first book in a six-part series authored by Day called Six Nights of Sin. This is erotica with love, intended for those eighteen and older.

Sarah wants a lover, but she wants one on her terms. She doesn’t have time to date and picking a guy up at a bar is not only dangerous but it doesn’t guarantee he’ll let her act out her fantasies. When she hears about La Petite Morte Club - a place for willing males and females to meet with rules and contracts so that all parties leave satisfied - she knows it’ll be perfect.

Still curious about the Six Nights of Sin series? Time for an interview with Ellis O. Day...

What inspired you to write erotica?
When I was younger, I read everything—satire, animal stories, mysteries, fantasy, etc, but as I got older I found that I read more and more romance. I like light-hearted books with a happy ending. One of my favorite authors is Julia Quinn. Her stories are light and refreshing with some heat between the sheets.

When I sat down and wrote my first story (one that’d been rattling around in my head for years), it turned out to be a YA fantasy (surprise, surprise). However, as I continue with that series, I’m drawn to include more sex (but I can’t because it’s YA). Life is full of sex and many of our ambitions and heartbreaks are due to how we deal with a person we’re attracted to.

Since I can’t add the sex in my current series, I decided to jump into erotica/romance. I classify my books as both erotica and romance because there is always love in the story. There’s a lot of sex—explicit, kinky sex—but also love.

Why do you think sex sells?
Sex has always sold and always will. Even if we go “all puritan” again, sex will still sell. It’ll just have to be hidden like in the past. Now, why do I believe sex sells? Because it’s in our nature to want to have sex. The urge to procreate is strong – and it’s a whole lot of fun! Plus, in books-unlike in life-the attraction is always reciprocated and the sex is always fabulous.

How do you go about writing a good scene or chapter?
I approach my erotica books the same way that I approach my YA books. The scene must be important. It must move the story along and for erotica, if it’s a sex scene then it also has to be hot!

I write the entire series out in rough draft and then on my first edit, I make sure that I’m feeling something. If I’m not getting a bit turned on by my prose, no one else will either.

What are your thoughts on the impact of 50 Shades of Grey?
Although, I personally didn’t care for the book (sorry, to all of you who loved it) I do think it had a huge impact on the sale of erotica. I hadn’t read much erotica until I decided to write it—I’d read mainly romance (some with explicit sex)—so, I don’t really know what the market was before 50 Shades, but I know the market now is on fire for erotica. I think 50 Shades is responsible for that. It allowed women to be open about their desire to read erotica. And that’s a fabulous thing.

What advice would you give to an aspiring erotica writer?
If you’re not familiar with the genre, read it. I was quite surprised at some of the erotica that I’ve read. I’ve really liked some and others I found debasing, but I had to read what was out there because just like all genres, there is a pattern for erotica and you need to know what your readers are going to want and expect.

So who wants to win something?! Ellis O. Day and I have partnered up to give away a couple items. There will be three winners - two lucky Giveaway Guy readers will win a the paperback collection of Six Nights of Sin, and another reader will win a Kindle Fire.

Blank Label custom clothing & $100 gift card [giveaway]

How many articles of clothing do you have that are made custom for you?

Blank Label believes in celebrating the individual. You should be comfortable in custom-made clothes that make you feel and look great everyday. Many of Blank Label's customers can’t stop smiling the first time they see themselves in their clothes made custom just for them. I know I'm pleased with my custom clothes.

This is what drives the folks at Blank Label.

But what happens at Blank Label is probably not what you'd expect. Their made-to-order design process takes an environmentally-forward approach, producing only what is requested by customers and using only raw materials in handmade proportions.

I call this shirt & shorts "the spring look"

When I visited the Fort Point location in Boston, the customer service was an experience. The staff listened to my preferences, offered opinions and suggestions, and taught me a few things about how clothing should fit the body. The experience was all about me really, without sounding snooty, and it'll be all about you too. Isn't the light pink polo a good look for spring/summer? It's soft knitted cotton pique fabric that allows for better movement.

Why does having a personal size pattern mean a great fit forever?

A size pattern is the blueprint for the way a garment fits, sketched onto paper cut-outs by a tailor using dozens of dimensions. Whether you shop online or in-person at Blank Label, your personal size pattern will be designed and saved to your personal profile (which you can edit any time).

When I visited in-person, the staff took my measurements, asked me how I prefer the fit of shirts and shorts, and created a profile for me. You can also enter your own measurements online and order items as you please. So with my profile, now I can make orders again on the site whenever I like.

Henry didn't wanna drop his stick for the photo

And I've got my eyes on another pair of the lightweight cotton twill shorts - hell, maybe even another polo - which are soft and perfect for warm weather. The shorts are durable and have substance, but not heavy by any means. Everything fits like a glove, just like it should.

You can visit the online shop or make an appointment for their locations if you prefer the in-person experience:
  • Boston - Downtown Crossing
    • Steps from Boston’s Financial District, the Downtown Crossing location is an open-floor experience with vintage architectural elements.
  • Boston - Fort Point
    • Conveniently located off A Street opposite Necco Street in Boston's fastest growing district, this store comes with on-site complimentary parking.
  • Washington, DC
    • Among some of the most influential think tanks and advocacy groups of K Street, this location resides between Farragut and McPherson squares.
  •  Chicago
    • In the heart of Chicago, between some of the tallest skyscrapers in the world.

Who wants to win something?! The folks at Blank Label have been very gracious and are offering one lucky Giveaway Guy reader $100 to spend in their shop.

Enter to win using the Rafflecopter form below. You may share on Twitter once a day for extra points for the duration of the giveaway.

By entering, you agree to have your email address added to Blank Label's mailing list at the end of the giveaway. You may unsubscribe at any time.

Kindle Fire & 100 Days of Solitude [giveaway]

Do you like strange things? Maybe a bit philosophical? This featured author is for you.

Author Daphne Kapsali was born in Athens in 1978, but that was a bit of a mistake on the part of the universe, because she’s actually a Londoner. And she's very nice if you decide to contact her.

When Daphne realized she was a writer, she promptly made herself homeless and unemployed to spend a few months living alone on a small Greek island and writing full-time. Are you imagining those picturesque villas by the water you see on travel sites and stuff? If you are, it's not quite like that.

100 Days of Solitude is a book that has inspired thousands of people to claim the time and space they need to find themselves and live their best lives. It's a personal journey that inadvertently became an accidental self-help guide to doing what you love and living as your true self.

100 Days of Solitude started off as a blog, a way for Daphne to record her experience of spending 100 days living alone on a small island, and to write every day. It was a personal project, an exercise in self-discipline and accountability, but it soon took on a life of its own.

The blog was read by hundreds of people on a daily basis, and the project was funded by a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter. The project ended in 2014, and 100 Days of Solitude, a collection of all one hundred daily entries, was subsequently released as a book.

Wanna go inside the mind of the author? Time for an interview with Daphne Kapsali...

What inspires you to write?
Everyday life. Something I saw, something that happened, something I thought about, or something somebody said. It's usually minor things that could easily go unnoticed and unremarked upon, but through the act of paying them attention they often take on another significance and become meaningful. I enjoy finding these connections between the little things that are all around us and the bigger things that If you approach life - and writing - this way, there is always something to inspire you and some insight to be gleaned.

How long does it take you to write a book, on average?
It depends. My first book, 100 days of solitude, took exactly 100 days to write. My novel, you can't name an unfinished thing, was also written in just under four months. My latest book, For Now, is a collection of stories written over nine months, and there are other things I've been working on for years and they're still not quite done. There's a lot of pressure to be prolific these days, and the urge to compare yourself to others, but everyone has their own pace, and we need to respect that and not try to force it out quicker than it wants to come. I think when a book is ready, you know it, and it will take exactly as much time as it needs.

What are you working on right now?
I'm sort of in between books at the moment. I published one recently, and with the preparation that went into it and the promotional work I had to do once it was released, I've fallen out of my writing routine. So I'm trying not to panic, and spending my time on what I call "admin" - marketing and promotion, mostly - while other stuff is brewing in the back of my mind. There's a book I've been working on for years, and which is still resisting me, that I'm gently nudging towards publication. And there's the little things that I write about, as and when they occur to me, and that will eventually culminate in another collection of essays.

What's the best writing tip you can offer an aspiring author?
Just write the stuff that you love to write. Regardless of what the market demands and what sells and what you think you should be writing. Put the best of yourself into your writing so that you can put out the best work you can, no matter what your genre or your subject matter or your style. If you're genuine and you love what you do, that will come through, and your work will find its audience. Back this up with hope, relentless optimism and a little bit of delusion, and you'll be fine.

What's a book written by another author everyone should read in their lifetime?
If I had to pick just one, it would be To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee. It can teach you what it means to be human.

Princess by Vera Wang [giveaway]

I've given away a couple bottles of Vera Wang Princess and those giveaways got a lot of action, so I'm back with another bottle.

The Princess fragrance is marketed to young women but there are many reviews that say it's great for all ages. And by the variety of folks who entered the previous giveaway, age doesn't matter for this perfume.

Vera Wang's Princess opens with notes of water lily and mandarin meringue. Mid notes of pink guava and Tahitian flower. Base notes of pink frosting and chiffon vanilla.

There are several factors which can affect the natural smell of your skin and the way a scent smells on you. Similarly, factors such as dry or oily skin can even affect how long the perfume's fragrance will last.

Who wants to smell like mandarin and pink guava? I've got a 3.4-ounce bottle of Princess by Vera Wang up for grabs for one lucky Giveaway Guy reader.

Enter to win using the Rafflecopter form below. You may share on Twitter once a day for extra points for the duration of the giveaway.

The 4th of July is a month away!

The 4th of July is right around the corner. Can you believe it? I did a giveaway for Independence Day last year, and I'm gonna do another one that ends right on the 4th.

One of my favorite quotes about the holiday is from Jim Gaffigan, my favorite comedian, when he said, "I normally don't have a burger, a brat, and a steak, but it is the 4th of July."

Watch this video to see what Jim has to say about the 4th of July:

Apple has a big following and I've got a pair of OEM ear buds I'm going to give away to a lucky reader. These buds seem to be popular so let's give it a go again. The giveaway is available to folks in the U.S.

What music have you been listening to lately? Here are some of the Apple buds' features:
  • Control Music and Video Playback
  • Enhanced Bass Response
  • Answer and End Calls
  • Resistant to Sweat and Water Damage

I also have a bunch of other giveaways going on, so check 'em out if you haven't already! They're also listed on the right side of my blog.
