Kindle Fire & Six Nights of Sin [giveaway]

If you're in need of a book that will stimulate you this summer, how 'bout erotica?

Author Ellis O. Day (that might sound familiar if you've entered some of my book giveaways recently) grew up with her nose buried in books and now enjoys writing the kind of stories she loves to read - romance, the steamier the better.

Ellis believes that the cornerstones of her erotica books and great romantic relationships are:
  • Love and friendship
  • Trust
  • Attraction
  • Fabulous sex

Interviewing for Her Lover, which you can get FREE, is the first book in a six-part series authored by Day called Six Nights of Sin. This is erotica with love, intended for those eighteen and older.

Sarah wants a lover, but she wants one on her terms. She doesn’t have time to date and picking a guy up at a bar is not only dangerous but it doesn’t guarantee he’ll let her act out her fantasies. When she hears about La Petite Morte Club - a place for willing males and females to meet with rules and contracts so that all parties leave satisfied - she knows it’ll be perfect.

Still curious about the Six Nights of Sin series? Time for an interview with Ellis O. Day...

What inspired you to write erotica?
When I was younger, I read everything—satire, animal stories, mysteries, fantasy, etc, but as I got older I found that I read more and more romance. I like light-hearted books with a happy ending. One of my favorite authors is Julia Quinn. Her stories are light and refreshing with some heat between the sheets.

When I sat down and wrote my first story (one that’d been rattling around in my head for years), it turned out to be a YA fantasy (surprise, surprise). However, as I continue with that series, I’m drawn to include more sex (but I can’t because it’s YA). Life is full of sex and many of our ambitions and heartbreaks are due to how we deal with a person we’re attracted to.

Since I can’t add the sex in my current series, I decided to jump into erotica/romance. I classify my books as both erotica and romance because there is always love in the story. There’s a lot of sex—explicit, kinky sex—but also love.

Why do you think sex sells?
Sex has always sold and always will. Even if we go “all puritan” again, sex will still sell. It’ll just have to be hidden like in the past. Now, why do I believe sex sells? Because it’s in our nature to want to have sex. The urge to procreate is strong – and it’s a whole lot of fun! Plus, in books-unlike in life-the attraction is always reciprocated and the sex is always fabulous.

How do you go about writing a good scene or chapter?
I approach my erotica books the same way that I approach my YA books. The scene must be important. It must move the story along and for erotica, if it’s a sex scene then it also has to be hot!

I write the entire series out in rough draft and then on my first edit, I make sure that I’m feeling something. If I’m not getting a bit turned on by my prose, no one else will either.

What are your thoughts on the impact of 50 Shades of Grey?
Although, I personally didn’t care for the book (sorry, to all of you who loved it) I do think it had a huge impact on the sale of erotica. I hadn’t read much erotica until I decided to write it—I’d read mainly romance (some with explicit sex)—so, I don’t really know what the market was before 50 Shades, but I know the market now is on fire for erotica. I think 50 Shades is responsible for that. It allowed women to be open about their desire to read erotica. And that’s a fabulous thing.

What advice would you give to an aspiring erotica writer?
If you’re not familiar with the genre, read it. I was quite surprised at some of the erotica that I’ve read. I’ve really liked some and others I found debasing, but I had to read what was out there because just like all genres, there is a pattern for erotica and you need to know what your readers are going to want and expect.
