$40 Amazon gift card and paranormal author D.R. Perry

Say hello to a fellow New Englander!

D.R. Perry writes all kinds of things. Mostly, they have strange and unusual elements. Not isotopes of Strontium, but speculative fiction; stories that ask "what if?" Creatures who are people or people who are creatures.

In 2017, A Change In Crime earned a shortlist nomination for Alternate History in the Dragon Awards, a nomination for the McGrath House Indie Author Award in the Historical Fiction category, and an Imadjinn award.

D.R. hopes you have as much fun reading her books as she did writing them.

Bearly Awake is the first of nine books in the Providence Paranormal College series. A charmed life can tumble down in an avalanche of problems.

Bobby Tremain’s the first in his family to attend college, also the first to see snow. A massive magical blizzard makes this not-so-average bear want to sleep all winter, but he needs to pass exams or risk flunking out of Providence Paranormal College.

Lynn Frampton’s got a brain of epic proportions and an even smarter mouth. She went to college on the other side of the country to escape the town where everybody knows and fears her brain. At college, Lynn's barely able to make friends, let alone influence people. At least she’s at the top of her class.

Bobby needs Lynn’s help to stay awake and pass his exam. She might just need his companionship, too. Can Lynn and Bobby find new hope together or will their failures send them both packing home?

Let this introductory novella transport you to Providence Paranormal College. Extrahumans of all types abound on this urban campus on the East Side of Providence, Rhode Island. This Ivy-League college recently opened its doors to anyone with enough talent. The Admissions Department at PPC enrolls humans with extraordinary grades, the magically and psychically inclined, vampires, werewolves, changelings, and even magic shifters like dragons and Kelpies. Come take a tour! If you like YA and NA Paranormal Romance or Urban Fantasy with strong romantic subplots, you’ll feel right at home here.

Still curious about Bearly Awake and the author? Time for an interview with D.R...

What inspires you to write?
It's this: what if? Those two little words are like a trail of breadcrumbs to me or maybe a laser pointer to a cat. I see something shiny off in the distance when those two words come around. I just have to know where they lead.

How long does it take you to write a book, on average?
The first draft doesn't take too long, maybe a month if it's a short novel like PPC. The longer a series gets, the longer the books take to draft and then to revise and edit. I do a lot of thread-connecting and looking back to make sure everything's tied up at the end of a series and stuff makes sense. One-offs or books in the same universe without the same overall plot arc take the least time, especially when the characters are familiar to me.

What are you working on right now?
I'm working on way too many things. There's the humorous series about a crime-fighting group of dissatisfied supernatural people, stories to go between the Providence Paranormal books when I bundle them, more Decopunk in my 1929 series, two different Game Lit projects, and a utopian science fiction about a couple of intergalactic lounge singers. Oh and I am working with my cover designer on redoing all ten of the Providence Paranormal books. I'm not busy, I have coffee!

What's the best writing tip you can offer?
Just keep writing. I know it sounds a lot like what the blue fish from that movie says but it is true. The more you write the more you can think of to write later.

What's a book written by another author everyone should read in their lifetime?
Everyone should read Slaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut. It's an important book and so simply written. I'll always envy Vonnegut's ability to create huge impact so directly.
