$50 Amazon gift card and the return of fantasy author Diana Anderson-Tyler

One power. One prophecy. One chance to change the world.

If your writing journey (like that of Diana Anderson-Tyler) has proved much more than a transient phase, then you've likely discovered that pursuing your passion as an adult is no longer like playing in a sandbox.

Welcome back to the blog, Diana!

Gone are the care-free, easy-going days of simply devising clever stories or thinking up unique characters and hastily following after them with your pen. Diana's writing has made the beautiful transition from hobby to profession, from curiosity to obsession, from amusement to craft, from passion to purpose.

Diana has come to believe that writers are also warriors. Many giants must be slayed as we strive to share our stories with the world. Many invaders must be routed as we defend the work whose characters, settings, conflicts, and themes keep us up at night.

Filled with magic, mystery, and sprinklings of Greek mythology, Age of the Ashers is a powerful fantasy adventure for those who love to lose themselves in the world of make-believe.

Petros is a well-oiled machine of an empire that has been overrun by evil. Every individual’s life is mapped out precisely, from the day of their birth until their much-anticipated Coronation at age seventy-five, when they each become ruler of their own personal paradise.

Eighteen-year-old Chloe Zacharias is content to exist as a social outcast and virtual recluse. Orphaned at the age of eight, she and her twin brother Damian live with their aunt and uncle, who only just tolerate their unwelcome charges. When classmate Ethan Ross gives Chloe a one-day pass to a newly opened museum, she discovers there’s much more to her utopian city, and the mysterious government that runs it, than she could ever have imagined.

When it becomes clear to the powers of the Underworld that Chloe could uncover their secrets and dismantle their world, the rulers send cunning Hermes, devious messenger to the lords of Hades, on a mission to destroy her before she finds out who—and what—she is.

Famed poet and romantic musician, Orpheus will do anything to reunite with his beloved wife Eurydice. Manipulated by Hermes into believing he can win back Eurydice if he charms a mortal known as “the Vessel,” Orpheus takes advantage of Chloe’s naïveté and voracious curiosity, and leads her into mortal danger.

Damian can’t ignore his sister or her strange behavior any longer. He has discovered that he has an astonishing gift of his own, and Hades and Apollo are shaken by the possibility that there is not one, but possibly two, entities with the power to topple the evil world they have created.

Chloe and Damian must work together, without becoming paralyzed by fear like their ancestors before them, or the citizens of Petros will continue to believe and be ruled by the horrific lies that have corrupted their world.

Still curious about the author? Time for an interview with Diana...

What inspired you to write Age of the Ashers?
I’d written a stand-alone novel, Moonbow, and thought it would be fun to continue the story... thousands of years in the future. The Petros Chronicles’s heroine (Age of the Ashers is book 1 in the series) is a descendant of Moonbow’s protagonist.

What are some of the challenges you face when writing?
Ordinarily I don’t have a hard time with writer’s block or feeling unmotivated. My challenges generally revolve around impostor’s syndrome. I’ll look at other authors’ success, wonder why I don’t have as many reviews or sales or what have you, and wonder if it the reason is that I simply don’t have what it takes.

I constantly have to remind myself that achieving success as a writer (and arguably as anything) is a marathon, not a sprint. If I continue to hone my craft, publish the best books I’m capable of producing, and incrementally improve my marketing game, I’ll achieve my professional goals. Patience, confidence, and perseverance are key.

How do you market your books?
I don’t enjoy the marketing side at all, so there’s ample room for improvement in this department! At the moment, I have a newsletter signup form on my website, use Instafreebie to give away sample chapters, send out monthly newsletters which feature original stories and giveaways, connect with readers and fellow authors via social media, and use services like Freebooksy and Bargainbooksy whenever I’m running promotions. My husband has also been helping me with Amazon ads. Once we have a decent handle on those, we’ll likely try navigating the Facebook waters.

Other than writing, what are you working on these days?
Does editing count? ;-)

Writing is my number one passion, so that’s what I spend the majority of my time working on. I do work on my body; working out is super important to me, for both physical- and mental-health reasons. I find that exercise drastically reduces any stress and anxiety I might be feeling while boosting energy and creativity. You seriously can’t beat it!

You meet a stranger in an elevator who asks about the copy of Age of the Ashers sticking out of your bag. What's your 30-second pitch to encourage them to read it?
Chloe is a regular teenage girl, but when she turns eighteen, she discovers she has a superpower that automatically makes her an enemy of her world’s mysterious government, the Phantasmata. Naively following her curiosity, she learns that the Phantasmata is ruled by wicked primordial gods intent on suppressing the truth – and any outsider who knows it.

Chloe can either play dumb, refuse to use her power, and thereby save her skin, or she can risk her life to expose the monsters, both mortal and immortal, who are keeping the world in darkness.
