Amazon gift card and historical author JDR Hawkins

JDR Hawkins is an award-winning author who has written for newspapers, magazines, newsletters, e-zines, and blogs. She's one of only a few female Civil War authors, and uniquely describes the front lines from a Confederate perspective.

A Rebel Among Us is the third book in JDR's Renegade series, and recipient of the 2017 John Esten Cooke Fiction Award.

In A Rebel Among Us, David Summers enlists with the Confederate cavalry and his delusion of chivalry is soon crushed when he witnesses the horrors of battle.

Shot by a Union picket, he winds up at a stranger’s farm. Four girls compassionately nurse him back to health. David learns his comrades have deserted him in Pennsylvania following the Battle of Gettysburg, but his dilemma becomes much worse.

He falls in love with the older sister, Anna, who entices him with a proposition. To his dismay, he must make a decision. Should he stay and help Anna with her underhanded plan, or return to the army and risk capture?

She glanced at Maggie and back down at the soldier. Dust and specks of blood covered his anguished face. Sweat and tears had trickled down, leaving tiny trails along his cheeks and temples. Anna’s heart grew heavy at the sight, but she resolved to save him. Her pity gave her power. She knew what she had to do, so she mustered her own authority.

“I’m sorry I don’t have anything to give you for the pain,” she said sympathetically. “I only wish we had some laudanum or chloroform.” She walked over to the black kettle, used the prongs to extract the needles and knife from the scalding hot water, and proceeded to thread a needle.

“Abigail,” she said, “please fetch Father’s good bourbon.”
Her little sister ran downstairs, followed by Claudia.
